Questions About Contacts - Information is Key

 

Are there still questions about contacts that have not been answered?  Information is key to a successful and happy contact lens wearing experience. Do not leave any question about contacts remain unanswered. Below is a list of commonly asked questions and always contact your eye doctor about any other questions regarding eye care.

 

 

 

Do contact lenses hurt? No, soft contacts on the market are extremely comfortable. Gas permeable lenses may take a little longer to get used to.

 

Will contacts fall or be blinked out?  No. The lens will remain in place unless they are rubbed out of your eye.

 

Can contacts be worn while playing sports?  Yes. If the sport is very vigorous, a soft lens may be the most appropriate.

 

Can a contact lens be lost behind the eye?  No. A thin but very strong membrane surrounds the eye and no lens can penetrate it. However, contacts can become dislodged and slide under the eyelid.

 

Can contact lenses be made for people that need bifocals?  Yes. The lenses are made so that the bifocal portion of the lens will remain in place so you can read with ease.

 

Can contacts be worn with dry eyes?  Yes, there may be lubrication drops needed from time to time or long term extended wear lenses may not be recommended.

 

What is astigmatism? Astigmatism is a common problem when the front surface of the eye is not rounded leading to blurry vision. Astigmatism eyes have several different curves.

 

Can contacts be worn with astigmatism? Yes, soft toric monthly, daily and extended wear contacts are available.

 

Can contact lenses be worn while swimming? It is recommended not to wear contacts while swimming due to bacteria. Wear goggles if it is necessary to wear contacts under water.

 

Can contact lenses block UV rays?  There are a few lenses on the market that block some of the UV rays; but it is recommended to wear sunglasses to totally protect the eye.

 

What material is the lens made of?  Contacts are made of a many materials most of them are polymers. Soft contacts contain water which varies from 40 – 70%.

 

Can contacts be shared with someone? Never wear someone else’s contact lenses and never share the lens you wear. Bacteria can be transferred to others and the eye can become greatly infected.

 

What types of contact lenses are there?  Some of the types of lenses include: special effects, gas permeable contacts, bifocals, colored lenses, toric lenses, disposable lenses and more.

 

How long does a contact lens last?  It depends on the type of lens worn and the care given to that lens. Do not wear a contact lens longer than is recommended by the manufacturer.

 

Is an eye exam necessary before ordering contact lenses online?  A prescription that is less than one year old can be filled by a website. Every prescription must be current to be filled.

 

Can an eyeglass prescription be used to fill contact lenses? No. These prescriptions are not the same. Contact lenses also need to be fitted by the doctor as they are prescribed.

 

What are extended wear contact lenses?  An extended wear lens is one that is worn longer than a typical daily lens. Daily lenses are removed every night and the extended wear lenses can be worn for days, weeks and even a month.

 

How do colored contact lenses work?  The tint of the lens will change the color of the eye; but it won’t affect the color of the world out there. Some colors will change the eye more than others; and the visibility tint only colors a lens so you can easily find it if dropped.

 

What vision problems can contacts correct?  Contacts can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia and astigmatism.

 

Can makeup be worn while wearing contacts?  Yes, just try to be careful not to get make up in and around the eye too closely. Makeup is made up of oils and this can be transferred to the lens.

 

Can contacts be worn if allergy symptoms are present?  Yes, but there may be more discomfort. At the peak of allergy season; it may be advisable to wear eyeglasses.

 

Can a torn contact be worn?  No, simply throw it away and get out a new pair of lenses.
