Eye Color – Can Change As You Grow Older

Can your eye color change as you get older? An infant will start out with blue eyes, and then they can turn into brown eyes or hazel. Eye colors change as we age because of the melanin that is in the iris or the colored part of the eye. Eyes that are brown will usually get even darker as we get older.

Colors of Eyes – Can Be Affected By Medication

Some glaucoma medications can affect the melanin in the iris and thus effects eye colors. It is especially noticeable if a patient is using medication in just one eye, the other will remain lighter because it seems to increase the melanin and makes the eye darker. Another possibility is an iris tumor. These are very rare, but a light colored eye can appear even lighter if a tumor is present. If you are really concerned about a lightening or darkening of your eyes, take a photograph and show your ophthalmologist. They will be able to determine through a complete eye exam if there is any cause for concern.
