LASIK
The word LASIK is an acronym for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis which is laser eye surgery; performed by an ophthalmologist or surgeon and a choice many people are making today to improve and correct their vision. During the surgery the cornea is reshaped so that it can properly focus light into the eye and onto the retina. This laser surgery is performed for the correction of nearsighted, farsighted, and/or astigmatisms and only takes about five to ten minutes per eye. Most of us know someone that has had this vision correction surgery. One of the reasons this surgery has become so popular is people like waking up to clear vision. There is very little post surgical pain and the vision improvement is almost immediate. They are saying their vision is better than ever before. What are some other reasons this eye surgery has become so popular? Contact lens wearers need eye care products to see but don’t like the inconvenience and expense of replenishing supplies. Sports enthusiasts may not want to wear glasses because they fall off and get in the way. Mothers may be concerned about the safety of their young children if they lose their eye glasses and frequent travelers have to be constantly thinking about packing or unpacking their eyewear.
Laser surgeries for the eyes have only been performed for the last ten years. Studies will determine the long term benefits and effects of this technique but some surgeons say by the year 2010, ninety percent of the people wearing lenses will be taking advantage of this surgery. Technology is advancing quickly when it comes to eye care in general but laser surgery is becoming more precise and customized for each eye. Wavefront-guided technology is a newer option of laser surgery worth looking into. This medical procedure provides an advanced 3-dimentional method to measure how the eye processes images. An excimer laser has brought more accuracy to corrective surgery than ever before. The FDA has provided strict guidelines before people can become candidates for this type of eye surgery; but if your eyes qualify the ophthalmologist can tell you why this type of surgery would be preferable to traditional laser surgery. The more precise and customized the surgery can be; the better.
These are some of the pros to having vision correction surgery; but what are the cons? The key to having a successful surgery is to ask a lot of questions prior to having the procedure. Is refractive laser surgery safe? No surgery is without some risk and possible side effects. Ask about the possibility of infection or delayed healing. What if there is an undercorrection or overcorrection of the eyes? What if the vision is actually worse than before? What if you are experiencing a halo effect? Are there activity restrictions? Is it possible your vision will return to the problems experienced before? What about the eye makes people a good or bad candidate for this laser surgery?
